Your Complete Guide to the 68RFE P0871 Code! Valve Body or Transmission Rebuild?
Posted by Jason Locke on to
News
The P0871 code put fear into the hearts of even the most courageous of Ram 2500 or 3500 Cummins owners, and it's a very bad sign for the condition of your Ram's transmission. That being said, just because the P0871 code shows its demonic face, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll need a new transmission or a rebuild. However, if you let that code go unattended too long and you start getting weird shifting into 5th or 6th gear, then things can get pretty spicy for your Ram, its transmission, and your wallet in one heck of a hurry. So the question becomes, can you fix a P0871 code with just a valve body? If so, at what point? And at what point do you actually need a full transmission or transmission rebuild? We here at Tier One are going to give you the long answer after the jump, but the short and very unsatisfying answer is it depends. There's a lot of factors that go into whether fixing a P0871 code solely requires a new 68RFE valve body or something substantial, and there's really no one "correct" answer for everyone.

GM Allison 10L1000 Valve Body Problems & Solutions!
Posted by Jason Locke on to
News
For whatever reason, when our dear friends over at GM get a hold of a ZF transmission and license-build it, they are exceedingly consistent at making it worse. The Allison 10L1000 has proven to be a bit of a troublemaker, even for Silverado and Sierra 2500 or 3500 trucks that are running around at stock power. One of the main failure points of the Allison 10L1000 transmissions is its valve body, which has more than a few problems that lead to weird shifting, transmission codes, burned clutches, and even the destruction of key internal components through a lack of lubrication. The problem's so bad as of this writing that there's trucks piling up in dealership lots waiting for new OEM valve bodies, and while the latest 2024 versions of the OEM 10L1000 valve bodies do solve some of the issues, they don't solve all of them. Secondly, a lot of dealerships are resorting to putting pre-2024 valve bodies in broken-down trucks just to get them going for as long as they'll last. But how the hell did this happen and why does a SunCoast Pro-Loc 10L1000 Valve Body Kit solve the problems?
How to Build a Bulletproof 10R80 Transmission!

The Ford 10R80 transmission is, without a doubt, an engineering marvel that helps the 2017-2024 F150s and 2017-2024 Raptors really fly while managing pretty good fuel economy for a bunch of trucks with the aerodynamics of your average brick and weights of an elephant or two. As amazing as the engineering is on the 10R80s, out here in the real world, the 10R80s suffer from more than a few issues that give it a pretty bad reputation that's probably only somewhat deserved. Your average F150 or Raptor that's not seeing a ton of off-roading, towing, or power mods will likely not have an issue with their 10R80 transmissions (especially if they're up-to-date on their TSBs and recalls), but if you have a Raptor that's out there doing Raptor things or an F150 that's getting pushed hard, you may have some issues. The good news is that we here at Tier One have a few built 10R80 transmission options that give your F150 or Raptor the reliability and outright toughness that it truly deserves from its transmission. Check out our video and follow our 10R80 builder, Cole, as he puts together one of our 2017-2024 F150 & Raptor Stage 2 10R80 Transmissions that can handle 750 crankshaft horsepower!
Deep Dive into Tier One's Stage 3 68RFE Transmission!

The 6.7L Cummins under the hood of your 2007.5-2024 Ram 2500 or 3500 is capable of hitting some seriously big power numbers with relatively few modifications and performance upgrades, but it's no secret that the 68RFE transmission sitting behind that big Cummins diesel has more than its fair share of problems that can crop up at stock power levels. Once you start adding some serious horsepower and torque, those problems go from annoying to potentially catastrophic. The Tier One 2007.5-2018 Ram 68RFE Stage 3 Transmission and 2019-2024 Ram 68RFE Stage 3 Transmission are purpose-built from the ground up to handle huge levels of power, aggressive applications, and extremely heavy towing without letting you down. While the Stage 3 transmissions may not be able to hold the same power as our competition units, the Stage 3 68RFE transmissions are a great choice for Ram trucks that are throwing down a whole bunch of power, but are still primarily street, trail, and towing rigs. We're going to take a look at all the parts and components we put into the Stage 3 transmissions so that you can see how we put these badass built 68RFE transmissions together. If you're a more visual learner, check out the video below of Tanner putting together a Stage 3 68RFE for one of our customers. Find even more build and breakdown videos over on our YouTube Channel!

Ram Cummins Mishimoto Transmission Coolers Breakdown!
Posted by Jason Locke on to
News
Both the 5.9L Cummins and 6.7L Cummins Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks are able to tow heavy right out off the showroom floor and make a whole bunch of power and torque with relatively few modifications, but doing either (or even both) generates a lot of heat. That heat can lead you at best waiting on the side of the road waiting for your Ram's transmission to cool down and at worst can hurt your transmission to the point where you'll need to get it replaced. That's why our good friends over at Mishimoto have put together a full lineup of drop-in transmission coolers that can help your Ram's transmission stay in a safe temperature range, even if you're towing extremely heavy uphill or if your truck is throwing down a bunch of extra power that's causing high operating temperatures.
Top Transmission Cooling Upgrades for 2019-2024 Ram 2500 & 3500s!
Posted by Jason Locke on to
News
The 2019-2024 Ram 2500 & 3500s with 6.7L Cummins diesels are some of the mightiest trucks on the road, but they certainly generate a ton of heat, especially if you turn up their power, tow extremely heavy, throw down at the track, or rip around off-road. Heat's not great for basically any mechanical component, but it can be real killer for your truck's transmission, especially for the particularly finicky 68RFEs in the Ram 2500 and some Ram 3500s. The good news is that we here at Tier One offer more than a few transmission cooling upgrades that will keep your Ram's transmission temperatures under control, even if you are stacking on the power or using your Ram how it's meant to be used on the road, at the track, or out in the dirt.
