Built 48RE Transmission that can Handle Hot 5.9L Cummins Tunes, Bolt-On Parts, Big Tires, and Extremely Heavy Towing
Your 2004 Ram 2500 or 3500 with a 5.9L Cummins can get a whole ton of power and one heck of a hurry with even the most basic tuning device, but that doesn't mean your stock 48RE automatic transmission can handle it. The Tier One Stage 3 48RE built transmission is built from the ground up by Tier One's transmission experts to handle the huge horsepower your truck can gain from potent 5.9L Cummins tuning, as well as applications that are extremely tough on the stock 48RE transmission like extremely heavy towing, aggressive off-roading, sled pulls, and even Run-What-You-Brung racing at your local drag strip. The Tier One Stage 3 48RE transmission can handle up to 650 horsepower, allowing you to add powerful Cummins performance tunes, mildly uprated stock-replacement turbos, bolt-on Cummins performance parts, and exhaust upgrades without needing to worry about your transmission letting you down. On top of handling extra power, the Stage 3 48RE addresses notably reliability problems with the stock 48RE, ensuring that you get a transmission that will let your 5.9L Cummins run at its best and dominate both on and off the road for years to come.
Features a Billet Triple-Disc Torque Converter and a Suite of Billet Internal Transmission Parts that Hold Huge Power
Each Stage 3 48RE Complete Transmission was carefully designed to handle big-time levels of power and features a ton of upgrades that allow it handle potent power modifications and aggressive truck applications. Outside of the transmission itself, Tier One includes a billet triple-disc torque converter that's far less prone to warping and burn-up than the stock torque converter, while its three discs provide more surface area for holding power under extreme loads. Feeding the transmission from the flex plate and the torque converter is a Sonnax billet steel input shaft that's more resistant to cracking and shearing under load than the stock shaft. The Stage 3 48RE Transmission also comes with a billet steel flex plate that's far more resistant to cracking and warping than the factory flex plate. The second gear band is a weak point in the stock 48RE that can't handle a ton of power, so Tier One includes a billet 2nd gear band strut, billet 2nd gear band anchor, and a billet 2nd gear band 4.2 lever that all work together to keep the second gear band from warping while providing more leverage for engagement under load. The Stage 3 transmission also includes a billet 2nd gear servo that features Viton seals to prevent leaks and handle firmer shifts and more power than the stock plastic servo. Each Stage 3 transmission features a Tier One High Pressure valve body that's capable of running at higher line pressures than stock so that the transmission is adequately fed fluid, even in extreme conditions. Tier One also includes a heavy-duty governor solenoid and heavy-duty transducer to eliminate those two weak points on the stock 48RE transmissions. We include a new Performance Rebuild Kit that comes with 6 overdrive clutches and 6 direct clutches from Borg Warner, as well as new hardware and seals. The Stage 3 48RE transmission is topped off with new seals and gaskets before being air-checked for potential leaks.
Fully Overhauled 48RE Transmission for Excellent Reliability
During our build of your 48RE Stage 3 transmission, we here at Tier One go over every millimeter of its internal components to guarantee excellent function and reliability. All parts are disassembled and cleaned from our OEM cores to ensure your new 48RE transmission is free from contaminants and other debris. We carefully inspect your transmission’s planetary gear train for damage before fully speccing all bearings and washers for endplay. The original transmission pump gets a cut stator, and is then checked for proper clearances. The valve body is likewise flat-sanded and its solenoids thoroughly inspected for better than OEM function. The performance rebuild kit includes new Borg Warner clutches, seals, gaskets, and sealing rings to replace all the wearable parts of the transmission before it’s installed on your Ram 2500 or Ram 3500.
Thorough Testing of the Valve Body and Entire Transmission Before Shipping
We here at Tier One take pride in every built 48RE transmission we manufacture for the Ram 5.9L Cummins trucks. To make sure that you get a transmission that’s as tough as your truck, Tier One puts both the valve bodies and the entire assembled transmission through rigorous testing to ensure you get the reliability you need for heavy towing and hauling applications with your 5.9L Cummins diesel. Once the valve body has been assembled, it’s air-checked for leaks before being put on our in-house valve body dyno to ensure proper fluid flow and pressure management. After final assembly of the transmission itself, we put it through a complete air-check to find potential leaks before putting the entire transmission on our in-house transmission dyno to ensure proper operation, performance, and power-holding.

Recommended gearing: the following gearing is recommended for the following tire sizes, and is required for Tier One to honor your warranty:
- 35" Tire: 3.73 gears or higher
- 37" Tire: 4.10 gears or higher
- +38" Tire: 4.56 gears or higher
