About 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins Transmission Pumps

The OEM transmission pump has some issues, which isn't great, considering that your Ram's transmission generally needs a steady supply of fluid to both function and not turn into a couple hundred pound hunk of scrap metal. But why does the factory transmission pump tend to fail or provide low levels of line pressure that can cause all sorts of "fun" issues. The issues can get even worse at high power levels, but why?

Common 68RFE Transmission Pump Problems

The OEM transmission pump on the 68FRFE transmissions has a few problems that can cause insufficient fluid flow to the rest of the transmission and valve body:

Uneven pump surfaces: the OEM pumps were not built to the tightest specifications, and often the pump surfaces aren't even flat, which can cause leaks. We here at Tier One flat-sand the 68RFE transmissions that we use in all of our 68RFE builds, though many other manufacturers use bonded pump plates to help prevent leaks.

Pump gear wear: the 68RFE's transmission pump uses a triple pump gear setup that helps produce adequate line pressure as quickly as possible. However, the pump gears, especially the center gear, can wear out pretty quickly due to a lack of lubrication and contamination from dirty transmission fluid. Flat-sanding the pump or blocking the drain-back circuit can help alleviate the issues.

Pump plate warp: under enough load, it's possible that the pump plate can warp, which can cause leaks and a loss of pressure. A few manufacturers offer billet pump plates that prevent warp, though generally, with proper flat-sanding and/or bonded pump plates, billet pump plates generally aren't necessary, but they can be a good idea if you've tried other pump upgrades, or if your Ram is making huge power.
