About 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins Clutch Hubs
The 68RFE is a transmission with more than a few problems, and a big one that you'll run into when you start to add on power and torque is the clutch hub. While swapping out the stock clutch hub isn't usually necessary for more mild-mannered Ram Cummins builds, once you stack on power and torque or start to tow extremely heavy loads, you could run into problems that could end up lunching your your Ram's entire transmission. But why is the clutch hub such an issue in the 68RFE transmissions, and what can you do about it?68RFE Clutch Hub Failure Points
The clutch hubs in the 2019-2024 Ram 2500 and 3500s with 68RFE transmissions tend to fail in a couple of different ways, especially if your Ram is running at significantly higher levels of power than stock. Lubrication hole cracks: one of the most common points of failure for both the clutch hub and clutch shaft is cracking from the lubrication holes. Due to the torsional stress and shock loads that both the hub and shaft experience when the clutch packs engage, the lubrication holes end up being weak points where the shaft and hub material can pivot. Eventually, these cracks will grow larger and cause a failure of the whole assembly. Weld seam failure: another common failure point is the welded seam where the clutch hub and clutch shaft meet. That weld is much weaker than the the clutch hub and clutch shaft itself, so when the entire shaft and hub is put under the load, that weld can fail and cause the hub and shaft to separate, which can then cause a catastrophic failure. Spline stripping: stripping the splines on the clutch hub and shaft isn't super-common, but not impossible, especially on Rams throwing down a whole lot of power and torque. Aftermarket clutch hubs are a good idea for any Ram 6.7L Cummins that is going for serious power or towing extremely heavy loads. Aftermarket 68RFE clutch hubs and clutch shafts are usually made out of high-strength billet steel which has far more torsional strength than stock, and are far less likely to suffer from cracking at the lubrication holes and a far less chance of the splines stripping when under load. Many performance billet clutch hubs also feature a one-piece design, where the hub and shaft are CNC machined out of a single piece of billet steel, instead of relying on a two-piece design with a weak weld. A one-piece design is far stronger and eliminates a needless point of failure in your Ram's transmission.
