Your Ram's torque converter is one of the most crucial parts of its powertrain, and unfortunately, the stock 48RE torque converter is widely considered the "weak link" behind the powerful 5.9L Cummins engine. The factory unit is prone to warping, cracking, and burning up once you start adding performance tuners or towing heavy loads. The good news is that there are high-performance 48RE torque converters available that can massively improve reliability and power-holding. That's why we here at Tier One have put together this handy guide to help you figure out just what torque converter your truck needs.

Single-Disc vs. Triple-Disc Torque Converters

One of the biggest factors in a torque converter's ability to hold horsepower and torque is the friction configuration. In the 48RE transmission, the friction disc is actually a component of the lockup piston assembly. When your transmission commands lockup, hydraulic pressure forces this piston—and the friction material bonded to it—against the front cover of the converter to create a solid 1:1 link between the engine and transmission.

Single-disc torque converters: Single-disc converters are the standard for OEM applications. Because the friction material is bonded to the piston, you only have one surface area of friction engaging with the front cover. While this design is cost-effective and sufficient for a stock truck used for daily driving, it has limited surface area. If you add horsepower or tow heavy loads, that single surface often cannot hold the torque, leading to slipping, superheated fluid, and eventual failure.

Triple-disc torque converters: As the name implies, triple-disc converters utilize three friction discs and a floating steel plate design inside the converter. This drastically increases the friction surface area available for lockup, allowing the converter to hold massive amounts of torque without slipping. Triple-disc converters are the gold standard for 5.9L Cummins builds that are used for heavy towing, sled pulling, drag racing, or high-horsepower street use. However, because the "bite" of a triple-disc is so aggressive, we strongly recommend installing a billet input shaft alongside one, as the stock 48RE input shaft is known to snap under the shock load of a triple-disc lockup.

The Valve Body Connection: Don't Kill Your New Converter

It is critical to understand that a torque converter is only as good as the hydraulic system powering it. In the 48RE, the valve body controls both the pressure that clamps the converter piston and the fluid flow that cools it.

Pressure and Flow Issues: Many 48RE failures are actually caused by poorly modified or worn-out valve bodies. If a valve body does not supply sufficient line pressure to the torque converter piston, even a brand-new triple-disc converter will slip and fail.

The Danger of Cooler Flow Starvation: Perhaps even more critical is the valve body's role in cooler flow (charge pressure). This flow is actually responsible for keeping the converter piston pushed *off* the cover when lockup isn't commanded. If the valve body restricts this flow, the fluid inside the spinning converter is subjected to centrifugal force, which can cause the piston to drift forward and unintentionally drag against the front cover. This "centrifugal apply" burns up the clutches, destroying the converter and generating massive heat buildup as a byproduct.

Billet Torque Converters

The second important distinction when it comes to durability is the material of the front cover.

Billet Covers: High-performance torque converters, especially triple-discs, almost exclusively use a billet steel front cover. The stock converter uses a stamped steel cover which is relatively thin. Under the massive hydraulic pressure required to clamp a multi-disc clutch, a stock stamped cover can actually flex or "balloon." This flexing reduces the contact area of the clutch (causing slip) and can even crack the cover, causing a massive leak. Billet covers are CNC-machined from a solid block of steel, providing the rigidity needed to prevent flexing and warping under extreme load.
